Literally: “Rescue workers in Nepal began clearing the rubble of destroyed houses with their bare hands on Saturday, searching for survivors after the country’s worst earthquake in eight years, which killed 157 people.”

Details: According to the National Seismological Center of Nepal, an earthquake struck the Jajarkot region of the western Himalayas on Friday evening with a magnitude of 6.4.

The German Research Center for Geosciences recorded the tremors at a magnitude of 5.7, and the US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 5.6.

Officials fear the death toll could rise as first responders only reached the hilly terrain near the epicenter, about 500 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu, early Saturday and began searching for survivors.

“The number of injured could be in the hundreds and the death toll could also rise,” Jajarkot district spokesman Harish Chandra Sharma said.

The publication notes that although the magnitude of the earthquake was not strong, the destruction and death toll were high due to the poor quality of construction in the area, and also because the earthquake occurred while people were sleeping.

Rescue efforts are expected to be slow as emergency crews must first clear roads blocked by landslides in many places, officials said, adding that helicopters and small planes should be ready to join the effort.

What preceded: At least 70 people were reported killed and hundreds injured after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northwestern Nepal late Friday.
