Nepal Airliner Crash: 72 Killed Due to Pilot Error

[포카라=AP/뉴시스] Nepalese rescue workers and civilians gather at the wreckage of a plane that crashed near Pokhara, Nepal. 2023.01.15.
The cause of the Nepal airliner crash that killed 72 people in January has been revealed. It was determined that it was a ridiculous mistake by the pilot.

According to Reuters on the 28th (local time), the Nepal Investigative Committee stated in a report released the previous day that the Yeti Airlines passenger plane crash was caused by the pilot accidentally cutting off the power.

The plane departed Kathmandu on January 15 and crashed just before landing in Pokhara, Nepal’s representative resort city. All 72 people on board died in this accident, including two Koreans.

Deepak Prasad Vastola, an aeronautical engineer and investigator, said, “The pilot was using the condition lever, which controls power, instead of the flap lever, which he should have been using. This caused the engine to run at idle and no thrust was generated.” explained.

This accident was recorded as one of the worst plane accidents ever to occur in Nepal. It was the second-highest death toll after the 1992 plane crash to Kathmandu, Nepal, which killed 167 people.

Nepal, home to 8 of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Everest, frequently experiences aircraft crashes due to its rugged terrain and sudden weather changes. It is known that as many as 350 people have died in airplane or helicopter crashes since 2000.

Due to safety concerns, the European Union (EU) has banned Nepalese aircraft from entering its airspace since 2013.
