The British and European media presented it as a circus of oddballs and the American media as the most extreme right-wing event in the history of the institution. The only thing that is certain is that this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) confirms, however you look at it, that it continues to have a special weight in recording trends in the conservative camp in USA and Europe.
CPAC, touted for decades as the most important event in the West for conservative political forces and especially the Republican Party, has in recent years turned into an ultra-cheap show of Donald TrumpSteve Bannon and the Republican extreme.
The Darkest Side from 1974
But this year’s event, which was organized last weekend and was more limited due to last year’s revelations about sexual assaults by the president of the conference Matt Schlapp, in addition to the well-known show and the international guests had another, darker side: for the first time in history of the institution – the first was in 1974 – neo-Nazis, white supremacists, openly racists and other extreme alt-right scumbags have been allowed to enter.
The gray international is troubling
Despite the fact that the “elite” guests such as… the cool dictator of El Salvador Naguib Bukele, the liberal far-right “anarcho-capitalist” president of Argentina Javier Millay, the marginally unknown former prime minister – for just 50 days – of Britain Liz Truss, the main Brussels Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage and Spain’s far-right Vox party leader Santiago Abascal barely fall into the category of neo-Nazis, the element that worries analysts and journalists about what’s next in American politics is the aforementioned.
According to the American media, American Nazis who had participated in previous years in various violent demonstrations, such as in Charlottesville in 2017 with one death, and are known for their action had discussions with Republican officials. According to reports they talked about “the science of race”, about… Jews and about conspiracy theories. Backstage at the event, other well-known neo-Nazis and racists, such as Greg Conte and Ryan Sanchez, a former executive of the Nazi Rise Above Movement, not only spoke about issues they… care about, but gave Nazi salutes, used the word “negro” and in general they did everything they could to advertise their presence.
They responded with announcements
The organizers of CPAC, the political organization American Conservative Union (ACU), responded to the related reports during the week with announcements that the neo-Nazis were not official guests and that they were not given invitations to the main events of the conference. Of course this was after an avalanche of complaints about anti-Semitism.
The fact that completely fringe political figures openly participated in the event is underlined by the presence of Jay Aemba on the panel where Truss and Farage spoke. Aeba is a conservative Japanese politician, the leader of a sect known as the Happy Science, whose members believe that he is the reincarnation of a supreme being from the planet…Venus.
In the same context, former US intelligence agent turned “alt-right” political commentator and disseminator of fake news and conspiracy theories, Jack Posobiec, openly argued that there is no longer a need for democracy in the US and that it should be overthrown and government replaced by… God.
The invasion of the Capitol became… pinball
One of the main references of the speakers and of the conference in general was J6, which is how they refer to the events of January 6, 2021 and the invasion of Trump supporters in the Capitol after the speech of the former president, who argued that the defeat it was the result of forgery. In the conference area, according to the responses, there was even a pinball machine under the title “J6 Rebellion” (photo), “an educational documentary game”, in which there were various functions with titles such as “Fake news”, “Political prisoners”, “Stop the Fraud” and “Deep State” (this was based on the conspiracy theory that the Capitol protesters were not far-right Trump supporters, but were set up by Democrats).
The tone was also set by the main slogan of the conference: “Where globalization comes to die”, while the keynote speech by the “orange (former) president” Donald Trump himself, in which, among other things, he threatened the… prince Harry that if elected will deport him because he is in court for his past case related to the reference in his book “Spare” about drug use, which (supposedly) was not taken into account in his immigration visa application.
