A crowd at Zurich airport was waiting for Nemo, who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, when he returned to Switzerland.
Flags, hooks, bouquets of flowers and above all ‘non-binary’ people that the singer, who wants to be named by gender-neutral representatives, has become a flag. “We are there, we want, we will continue,” we read on the posters about recognizing one’s identity for non-binary people. “Woman, man, man,” wrote another. Then Nemo sang “The Code” again, which gave him the victory, in front of the full fans behind the barriers: a very personal song that describes his journey to bring out his gender identity. “I broke the codes. I broke the cup,” Nemo said later, referring to the fact that he literally broke the crystal trophy in a gesture of enthusiasm while receiving it. “The fans at the airport were warmly welcomed – he said – and it showed me how beautiful it is to be part of a community”.
Nemo Mettler, who currently lives in Berlin, is from Biel, a bilingual German-French city in northern Switzerland.
The competition has been a showcase for the LGBTQ+ community for years now. Austrian bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst won the 2014 edition, while French candidate Bilal Hassani took part in 2019.
