Neither third nor fourth: the rate of vaccination falls and they alert for an increase in cases

The scenes are quite far from the crowds and long lines that were observed until last February, when Covid-19 infections had already begun to drop considerably but there were still the resonances of an omicron variant that between December and January had reproduced between thousands of people. With many neighbors who have not yet received the third dose and many more who refrain, at least until now, from inoculating themselves with the last booster, these days not many people attend vaccinations in the City. Meanwhile, a rise in cases is being registered, as a prelude to a new outbreak, and for this reason the health authorities urged the population to complete the vaccination schedules.

“Those who have been given the reinforcement for more than 4 months and are over 50 years old, can take the fourth”

Nicolás Kreplak, Buenos Aires Minister of Health

According to data provided by the XI Sanitary Region (area that includes La Plata, Ensenada and Berisso and other districts of Buenos Aires), until now a total of 3,380,204 vaccines have been applied, which, broken down, distribute 1,362,378 of the first dose, 1,244,308 of the second, 636,476 of the first reinforcement and 137,042 of the second reinforcement.

Faced with the alert of the latest statistics, the Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Nicolás Kreplak, stated that an increase in Covid-19 cases linked to Omicron’s BA.2 subvariant is being registered in the Province. “There is an increase in cases and other respiratory diseases. A few weeks ago there were flu cases, now we are seeing an increase in coronavirus cases because this variant of Omicron called BA.2 is circulating, ”said the head of the Buenos Aires health portfolio.

Kreplak added that this subvariant of one of the last strains of COVID-19 detected “has already produced outbreaks in some parts of the world, but at the moment we do not have an increase in hospitalizations.”

In this sense, the official reiterated the importance of continuing to use the mask in closed places, as well as prioritizing the ventilation of the environments. In addition, Kreplak called on the population to complete the vaccination schedules against COVID-19: “Although the virus is mutating, the vaccine is the same,” he clarified.

“It is very important to take the third dose. Those who have more than four months of having given the booster and are over 50 years old, they can take the fourth, ”he said.

In this regard, the minister explained that “all the groups that have the indicated vaccine have it free in all the vaccination centers in the Province.” In any case, the provincial official reported that during this week shifts were sent so that people are aware that they must attend the vaccinations.

For his part, the head of the XI Sanitary Region, Manuel De Battista, admitted that “the rate of vaccination dropped” both in the third dose and in the fourth and attributed, in part, that drop in applications to the fact that for the last reinforcement, you have to wait four months from the last inoculation and, he assured, “many people are waiting for that period to be met.”

In addition, De Battista indicated, that at this stage the drop in applications is also affected by the fact that the population that can be vaccinated is smaller.

Who can get vaccinated

In this new insistence of the authorities so that the people of Buenos Aires complete the vaccination schemes, it was recalled that the first and second doses, free and federal, are applied to those over 3 years of age; the third dose is free for all people over 12 years old; and the fourth, free (optional) for travelers with travel certification and informed consent, downloaded from vaccinatepba.gba.gob.ar. and fourth dose (second booster) for health personnel, people 50 years of age or older, people over 12 years of age with immunocompromise, security forces, and teachers. (Four months must have elapsed since the last inoculation).
