Ölrain is to be listed as a historical monument: massive resistance is forming among the neighbors.
Bregenz Whoever can afford it lives here. The Ölrain is the first address in Bregenz. Land is precious, the historical treasure hidden beneath the surface of the earth seems priceless. The ancient Brigantium settlement area stretches from Josef-Huterstraße to the Blumenstraße high school. Archaeologists describe the forum complex as one of the best preserved in the Rhine and Danube provinces. The historical documentation, which helped create a digital city map, is also excellent. As the UN reported yesterday, the entire Ölrain plateau is now to be listed as a historical monument. With far-reaching consequences for the quarter, because future development would have to be subordinate to the protection of the remains of the settlement area.

The monument protection plans are met with fierce resistance from the neighbors. One of them is lawyer Ludwig Weh. “We spoke out against being placed under protection,” he says in an interview with the UN. In the course of the proceedings, the residents reported their concerns and submitted negative comments on the request of the Federal Monuments Office. “As far as we know, the entire area has been archaeologically examined. The extent of the settlement is known, which means that sufficient documentation is available. We no longer see any need to put this under protection, ”says Weh for many of the inhabitants of the Ölrain. A group around another lawyer also opposed the plans. A possible decision would be fought in any case, it goes on to say.

Limitations unclear
The investigation is still ongoing. Bernhard Fink is a master builder in Bregenz. On the one hand, a decision should determine whether there is a ground monument at all and, if so, what the ordinance looks like. “There is quite a bit of leeway here,” says Fink. Depending on the formulation of the regulation, this could range from “must be preserved” to “sift through and document”. In this case, building would then be possible at any time. In principle, however, monument protection would have an impact on the future development of the Ölrain. There will be no high-density settlement development in this location anyway. However, a certain amount of construction activity would be expected. Fink speaks of undeveloped land and buildings that have no particular significance in terms of building culture.

Even if it is currently still unclear which restrictions a decision would result, there is already great dissatisfaction among neighbors. VN-MIG
