British Pat (70) had to leave her house at the end of December after rats made their home there. The house was completely taken over by mold that could be found on the walls and even in the bed. But that was beyond Pat’s neighbors. They raised about 140,000 euros and completely renovated the house.

Pat had to leave her home when she became chronically ill from the mold and moisture in the walls. The heating at her Swindon property broke down two years ago and there was only electricity in two rooms. Her neighbors took matters into their own hands and, together with several companies, transformed the house into a clean and safe environment for Pat. She got a new boiler, new furniture, the moisture problem was tackled and pest control put an end to the rat plague.
More than 150 local residents and seventy companies helped Pat find a new home. It was her friend Janet who started the whole crowdfunding thing when she discovered what Pat’s house looked like. “Since corona she no longer let me in until she suddenly asked me to help her clean. I thought that was strange at first. When I set foot in the house, I immediately knew that she had to get out of there as quickly as possible,” says Janet. Pat herself admitted to being ashamed of the situation, but in the meantime she cannot believe her happiness. “I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart,” she says.
