In accordance with the East Side Coastal Resilience Plan (ESCR), a portion of the park’s green areas underwent extensive redevelopment. However, the felling of several trees has made the inhabitants of the surrounding areas dissatisfied.

It is for this reason that the protesters gathered at the park to collect remains of the crushed trees and from there, they walked through the streets of Alphabet City in a march until they reached the door of the offices of the municipal councilor of the district, Carlina Rivera. .

A participant in the march expressed his feelings about it: “The important thing about this is to preserve the park. The park has already been destroyed. Half of it is destroyed, but if we save what remains of the park, we will be saving some of the life that exists there. They have already exterminated everything, they have ended our lives.”

According to community group 1000 people – 1000 trees, with the remodeling of the park, more than 600 healthy mature trees have been felled. Therefore, they ask that their progress be supervised to mitigate the environmental impact of East River Park.
