Janusz Kupcewicz, considered one of the best Polish footballers of his era, has died at the age of 66.

At the 1982 World Championships, he contributed to winning bronze medals and was one of the main drivers of success. In the match for third place against France, he scored the winning goal, the Poles won 3:2.
The native of Gdańsk was included in the best eleven in the history of the Arka Gdynia team. He helped the team to win the first Polish Cup in 1979, he enjoyed the league title in the colors of Lech Poznań four years later.

Former Poland international Janusz Kupcewicz has passed away at the age of 66.
Zbigniew Boniek described him as one of Poland’s greatest playmakers and his performances at España ‘82 played a big part in Poland’s 3rd place finish.

Kupcewicz also played in France (Saint-Étiene), Greece (Larissa), and ended his career in Turkey (Adanaspor). The talented midfielder was hindered by numerous injuries that did not allow him to show his full potential.
He represented Poland in 1976-83, making 20 starts.
After his career, Kupcewicz was also a coach of Lechia Gdansk or an assistant on the bench of the national team, he also led the Polish futsal team, he was also a physical education teacher and a city councilman. He became embroiled in a corruption scandal in Polish football, but his involvement in it was never fully explained.
He had health problems in recent years. Last Sunday, according to Polish media, he dropped out at the railway station in Gdynia. An ambulance took him unconscious to a hospital in Gdańsk, where he died.
