Residents of De Pijp are completely fed up with the nuisance of the various ‘dark stores’, as the distribution centers of fast shopping services are called. According to the residents, the speed camera drivers drive back and forth all day (and sometimes also night) and make a lot of noise. The sidewalk is also constantly full of bicycles. More than a hundred residents have now written a letter to the city council asking to do something about this.

They’ve only been there a year. but already impossible to imagine from the streets: the flash couriers of the companies Gorillas, Zapp, Getir and Flink. For many an ideal way to get your groceries quickly, usually within 10 minutes. But not everyone is satisfied with this development.
“De Pijp will simply become a large distribution center”, according to resident Joost Munning. “Beautiful shops disappear, that’s why shops that have been taped come back. That’s just not what you want around. It’s not good for quality of life.”

In De Pijp, within a radius of less than 300 meters, three buildings have been transformed into ‘dark stores’. Munning says that the neighborhood is especially tired of the constant noise pollution: “Now the delivery person is doing it fairly quietly”, he says when he points to a bicycle courier, “but normally they also just want to ride in by bicycle. Then it clatters over the threshold. Residents are going crazy.”

GroenLinks councilor Elisabeth IJmker also sees the problems and is concerned about the development of delivery services in the city. That is why she submitted a motion last summer for research into the effects of the services and she put questions to the board this week.
“We see that many residents in different neighborhoods suffer from this and that very little is actually being done about it,” says IJmker. “Enforcement requests are being submitted here and there, but the municipality still has few resources to do something about it.”

Gorillas and Flink leave it on AT5/NH Amsterdam know how to stay in touch with local residents and want to contribute to a pleasant living and working environment. For example, Flink says: “We carefully select our hub locations on the basis of spaciousness so that our employees can take breaks indoors and bicycles are stored indoors. We do everything we can to ensure that communication with the neighbors runs smoothly.”
If it is up to IJmker, the problems will be solved quickly. “What we have now asked is to see what kind of buildings these companies are settling in. For example, due to all the nuisance we hear about, it is not wise to place a branch in the middle of a residential area.”
