The Austrian chancellor Carl Nehammer defended his country’s decision in an interview with ORF on Sunday veto Bulgaria and Romania for Schengen.
He reiterated part of the reasons for the refusal already given by him and by the Minister of the Interior – there is not enough pressure against illegal border crossings by migrants.
If the external borders of the EU don’t work, neither can the internal bordershe said.
Nehammer again defended his veto, despite protests from the local economy. According to the chancellor, issues of economic policy and security policy should not be mixed, it is clearly a security issue for Austria.
By contrast, the president of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen expressed “extreme” regret over the veto.
“Austria is in an extremely difficult situation due to the influx of refugees and migrants. But unfortunately I have to admit it I do not see the connection between this problem and the accession of Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen, he stresses. I don’t see how this blockade will change anything about the situation in Austria. I only see that we have created strong dissatisfaction at a European level”, adds the head of state.
