Nehammer defended the Schengen veto for Bulgaria and Romania

The Austrian chancellor Carl Nehammer defended his country’s decision in an interview with ORF on Sunday veto Bulgaria and Romania for Schengen.

He reiterated part of the reasons for the refusal already given by him and by the Minister of the Interior – there is not enough pressure against illegal border crossings by migrants.

If the external borders of the EU don’t work, neither can the internal bordershe said.

Nehammer again defended his veto, despite protests from the local economy. According to the chancellor, issues of economic policy and security policy should not be mixed, it is clearly a security issue for Austria.

By contrast, the president of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen expressed “extreme” regret over the veto.

“Austria is in an extremely difficult situation due to the influx of refugees and migrants. But unfortunately I have to admit it I do not see the connection between this problem and the accession of Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen, he stresses. I don’t see how this blockade will change anything about the situation in Austria. I only see that we have created strong dissatisfaction at a European level”, adds the head of state.

And it’s official: we remain outside Schengen, Croatia has been granted entry since 2023.

Austria and the Netherlands blocked the decision for us

We remember it on December 8, an official veto was imposed on our admission by the Netherlands and Austria.

The road to Croatia’s accession to the Schengen area is clear. This was agreed by the ministers of the 26 countries of the Schengen area in a meeting in Brussels. The land border control of the popular tourist destination will be abolished early next year 2023.

The head of state Rumen Radev had a telephone conversation with the president of the European Commission yesterday (EC) Ursula von der Leyen on Schengen. Radev expressed his expectation that our country’s achievements will be taken into account by all EU partners and that Bulgaria will join Schengen as early as next year. The matter will also be discussed at this month’s European Council meeting in Brussels, according to the presidency’s press centre.
