Negotiations to Increase State Shares in PT Freeport Indonesia Still Ongoing: Minister of Investment & President Jokowi’s Tough Stance

Jakarta

Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia opened his voice about the tough negotiations to increase state shares in PT Freeport Indonesia. Currently the negotiation process to increase share ownership in Freeport by 10%, bringing the total to 61%, is still ongoing.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) also advised that these negotiations must provide benefits to the government and society. Previously, Jokowi said that the negotiation process for adding shares in Freeport was tough.

“Oh yes, negotiations, that’s normal. During negotiations, the President ordered us to have more benefits for the government and the Indonesian people,” said Bahlil at the DPR, Jakarta, Monday (1/4/2024).

Bahlil believes that Jokowi’s target can be achieved. “So yes, we have to negotiate, and God willing, we can do what the President is targeting,” he said.

Previously, Jokowi opened up that negotiations on Freeport shares were very tough. He said that negotiations for Freeport’s shares had been going on for quite some time since last year but had not yet reached an agreement.

“Yes, negotiations have been going on for a long time, yes, it’s tough. Not tough, really tough,” said Jokowi at the Mercure Hotel Ancol, North Jakarta, Thursday (28/3/2024).

Jokowi continued that currently the government is preparing regulatory revisions to realize the Freeport contract extension.

The regulation that wants to be revised is Government Regulation (PP) Number 96 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Mineral and Coal Mining Business Activities.
