The White House said negotiations on an arms deal between North Korea and Russia are progressing actively.
White House National Security Council (NSC) Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby explained in a telephone briefing on the 30th local time, “There is something new to share.”
In particular, in this briefing, it was analyzed that negotiations on the arms trade have accelerated since Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea last month.
Regarding Secretary Shoigu’s visit to North Korea, Kirby said, “It was to persuade North Korea to sell shells to Russia. After that, Kim Jong-un and President Putin exchanged letters and promised to strengthen cooperation.”
“After the visit, another Russian official visited Pyongyang for follow-up discussions, and related discussions among senior officials may continue over the next several months,” he added.
When asked what types of weapons the two countries are negotiating, he replied, “Various types, but one thing is for sure: artillery shells.”
However, he explained that the letter sent between State Councilor Kim Jong-un and President Putin contained superficial content encouraging support, but did not see progress in specific details.
