JAKARTA, investor.id Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is a heart disease that has been present since birth due to imperfect heart formation in the early stages of fetal development in the womb.
It is reported that the incidence of CHD is about 8 babies out of 1000 live births with 30% of them showing symptoms in the first weeks of life where most of the CHD patients are neglected or not treated properly.
Congenital Heart Disease Specialist Heartology Cardiovascular Center dr. Radityo Prakoso said CHD patients need at least one consultation with a heart doctor who specializes in Congenital Heart Disease.
Patients with CHD have a three times greater life expectancy if properly treated by a cardiologist and congenital heart surgeon. At least there are several reasons why CHD patients are neglected. Among them are patients who feel they have recovered because they have been treated when they were children so they do not consult regularly in their teens and adults.
“Plus, busy work. So that consultation with a doctor is not appropriate or the patient’s neglect of the complaints felt. This decrease in heart function occurs gradually, so that with regular consultations, this damage can be detected early,” said dr. Radit on the sidelines of the virtual media gathering of the Heartology Cardiovascular Center, Saturday (29/5).
Along with medical advances, Dr. Radit said that currently some types of CHD can be treated without surgery. Zero Fluoroscopy (without radiation) catheter intervention is the latest technique for treating CHD without surgery.
It is known that radiation can cause long-term effects for both patients and doctors and the catheterization laboratory team. This procedure uses pure imaging aids from echocardiography, without the use of radiation beams. In Indonesia, the method was pioneered by him and now this procedure can be done at Heartology.
“The advantages of Zero Fluoroscopy include short treatment days, use of less anesthetic and drugs, very small incision scars, and are more cost effective,” concluded Dr. Radit.
