KULON PROGO, KOMPAS.com – Kulon Progo Health Service, Special Region of Yogyakarta, stated that laboratory tests on samples of suspected cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) have been released. As a result, four suspected cases were declared negative for JE.
The results emerged through research at the Yogyakarta Center for Environmental Health and Disease Control Engineering (BBTKL).

“Four JE (sample test) results came out. “The results are negative,” said Head of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Kulonprogo Health Office, Rina Nuryati, in a short statement, Tuesday (14/11/2023).
These negative suspects constitute four of the five cases currently being investigated by the Kulon Progo Health Office.
This research is part of the government’s efforts to ensure there are zero cases of JE in DIY, as no similar cases have been found in the last three years.
JE disease is caused by the JE virus. This disease is usually found in children under 15 years of age.
The disease appears with symptoms of high fever in the early days to seizures when not treated immediately. This disease is considered very dangerous because of its damage to the brain. Late treatment can result in death.
The Kulon Progo government continues to carry out surveillance to ensure there is zero JE. Throughout 2023, there are five suspects in Kulon Progo. One in five cases dies.
Suspect samples are tested in the laboratory. As a result, four have come out with negative results.
“JE cases in DIY have actually been zero in the past three years. However, this must be proven through surveillance. Every year we record any suspects, then samples are sent. “Hopefully this time the results will be negative,” said Doctor Rina on a previous occasion.
JE disease is a disease that originates from animals (zoonosis) and is spread through intermediary animals, such as culex mosquitoes infected with JE.

These mosquitoes are usually found around houses, rice fields, ponds or ditches. The virus reservoirs are cows, buffalo, monkeys and several species of birds.
JE disease can actually be prevented after knowing the source and transmission. People who implement a clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS) can avoid disease through proper food processing and maintaining environmental cleanliness.
