Nintendo has gone public and warned users not to peel off the protective film that is above the screen on new ones Switch OLED. This adhesive layer strengthens the screen, and although it is technically possible to remove it, the company strongly recommends not to do so (this advice is to find both page two of the health and safety document that comes with the Nintendo Switch OLED, and was repeated in a conversation with IGN.)
The so-called anti-scattering film is intended to prevent shards of glass from splashing out if the screen is damaged (for example if you lose the console on the ground.) Such a film did not exist in either the original or in Switch Lite, since these devices had plastic panels – which may crack but will not shatter in the same way as glass.
Now many people are wondering if this means that you do not need regular screen protection on the Nintendo Switch OLED, and if it holds up with the film that is already on the glass. Well, you do not have to wonder about that for a long time, because we have already received the answer
Do I need an extra screen protector on Switch OLED?
From Nintendo’s side, it is recommended to get screen protection for Switch OLED – the company even sells a variant together with a official carrying case on its website. At the same time, it is worth asking how much extra protection you actually get with a second layer on the outside of the screen.
The answer is that you actually get a lot of extra protection. This is because the movie that is already on the screen is technically not made to protect the Switch device, but you. It will probably prevent the occasional scratching and scratching, but the whole point of the film is to prevent glass from splashing out if the screen is damaged, not to protect the screen from shattering.
Therefore, it is not a layer that will greatly protect the Switch OLED, compared to a screen protector made for the purpose, in tempered glass or another suitable material.
If you want to keep your new Switch OLED dew-free and scratch-free, and reduce the likelihood of the screen being damaged if you are unlucky and lose the device, then we recommend investing in an additional screen protector, which you put over the existing film .
Some people do not like that the screen protector changes the look of the console, but in our opinion it looks far better with a screen protector than a large crack in the screen.
At the same time, we strongly recommend that you NOT removes the existing film and replaces it with a screen protector. Place the new one over the old one so that your Switch is properly secured.
