Need for emergency aid packages greater than calculated

Despite 1000 registered people per resort in Paramaribo who may be eligible for an emergency aid package from the government, it appears in the field that in certain provinces a considerable group of people who are not registered sign up for an emergency aid package. Coordinator Bureau Unit Shaquille van Throo acknowledges that the need is greater than calculated, but says he can only help a limited number of people. “We want to help everyone, but we have to stick to the number of people we have registered,” says Van Throo.

The Unity Bureau, together with personnel from the National Army, district and district councilors, the administrative services and other support services, distributes a total of 13,000 emergency aid packages from the government in Paramaribo. The Ministries of Social Affairs and Housing, Regional Development and Sport and Defense, together with the various supervisory directorships, offer their full support to the project. The various ministers and district commissioners of Coronie, Nickerie and Paramaribo have also offered their support in recent weeks and days. “So far we are satisfied with the way things are going. Occasionally a few small mistakes, but these are immediately caught and corrected in the field. Only in the area of Good Expectation did we have a challenge, because people do not listen to the instructions to stay at home as much as possible. When they saw the military trucks, they came to us en masse, while that was not allowed. The military responded well to prevent calamities,” said Van Throo.

The various services still have a lot of work to do in the field to register and provide people afterwards. “Mi no ben sabi tak’ package ben prati. Un gim’ wan because a libi in a kondre kon tranga,” a man told an rr member in the Livorno district on Friday. He was allowed to register on the spot and then receive a package. Another local resident runs with an ID card to a member of Bureau Eenheid with the request to receive a package. She was also offered a 25 kg bag of rice and a bag of food. She thanked the workers.

On Friday, July 2, 2021, the various government services involved in the project ‘Distribution of emergency aid packages’ visited the resort of Livorno. The distribution of emergency aid packages has meanwhile taken place in five districts of Paramaribo. In addition to Welgelegen, the districts Rainville, Centrum and Latour (Good Expectation) and Livorno have been visited. The Beekhuizen, Blauwgrond, Flora, Munder, Pontbuiten, Tammenga and Weg naar Zee districts will follow in the coming week.
