These are good times for NEC fans. The club is in particularly good shape in the Eredivisie and of course reached the cup final against Feyenoord. Several club records are about to be broken.
The special season of the Nijmegen team got even more shine on Sunday in Arnhem, when they won 0-3 against Vitesse. The triple hit means that NEC has 57 goals in the Eredivisie with five games to go. Equaling the club record from 2011. In the 2010/11 season, NEC also scored 57 times, but the club finished ‘only’ eleventh in the Eredivisie. NEC will have the opportunity to write history in the competition this season against PEC Zwolle, AZ, Excelsior, Feyenoord and Almere City FC.
Not only can a goals record be broken by this season’s NEC, a points record is also in sight. NEC still has to work on this with the current total of 46 points, the record has been 53 points since 1972. Under the leadership of the legendary Wiel Coerver, NEC won fifteen times and drew eight times in the 1971/72 season. NEC then finished seventh.
As if that weren’t enough, NEC can also match the highest final ranking in club history. Under coach Johan Neeskens, the formation from Gelderland finished fifth in the 2002/03 season, a place that NEC currently also occupies. Number six Ajax is breathing down the neck of the Nijmegen team.
