Necessary to understand local context to face climate crisis: SHCP

“A nuanced understanding of local contexts, along with flexible and inclusive policies, is fundamental to foster equitable and sustainable solutions to the climate challenge,” emphasized the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, during the Council’s ministerial meeting. of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which takes place in Paris, France, in which the path to achieving a sustainable and inclusive economy was analyzed.

The Mexican official stressed that universal approaches, to correct different problems, risk exacerbating disparities and hindering progress towards global climate goals. At this point, he stressed in front of peers convened by the OECD that “it is imperative to jointly address current global challenges and turn them into opportunities for a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable world.”

During his participation, recorded by the Treasury in a statement, Ramírez de la O recognized that the world economy has proven resilient after the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent geopolitical tensions, however “it continues to be immersed in a complex and uncertain environment.” . So much do the challenges persist that growth appears “modest with vigorous efforts by central banks around the world to reduce inflation, amid fiscal and debt pressures.”

At this point, he highlighted that it is necessary to confront global crises, as well as the structural social challenges that have deepened inequality in all countries, regardless of their income level. To do this, he considered, “it is necessary to promote inclusive development that requires gender equality, digital inclusion, trade facilitation and attention to climate change.”

In his participation, Ramírez de la O also highlighted that Mexico has reduced the social gap, stimulated domestic consumption and strengthened its economy, by prioritizing support for the most vulnerable population. “This commitment to social inclusion and sustainable economic development has been essential in such challenging times, allowing us to move towards a more equitable and prosperous future for all,” he commented.
