NEC will play its last home game of the Eredivisie season against Feyenoord on Sunday afternoon. The people of Nijmegen are still in the race for European football and have already secured a place in the play-offs. In addition, no decision has yet been made about some players whether they will also wear the NEC uniform next season. For these reasons, NEC has decided not to say goodbye to the departing players on Sunday, but to do so at a later time.
While in previous years a number of players were always said goodbye after the last home game of the competition, the situation this football year is completely different. NEC is performing so well in the Eredivisie that with two matches left to play, they are fully participating in the battle for tickets for European football. Fifth place, currently held by Ajax with two points ahead of NEC, entitles them to participate in the second preliminary round of the Europa League.
If NEC finishes in sixth or seventh, and not fifth, place, the Nijmegen season will be extended with the play-offs for European football. Then NEC will be in action on Thursday, May 23 in the Goffert Stadium. The opponent in the possible semi-final is still unknown.
Since the Nijmegen team’s season is not over yet, it has been decided to say goodbye at a later date to the NEC players who will leave the club in the summer, regardless of the final ranking. NEC will communicate at a later time when the departing players will be said goodbye.
