Tastemaker Eredivisie suddenly submits a transfer request

Magnus Mattsson will most likely leave NEC next summer. The 24-year-old Dane has an expiring contract and has informed the Nijmegen club management that he does not want to extend it. Given the fact that NEC can extend Mattsson’s contract for another year, the attacking midfielder does not appear to be leaving on a free transfer in the summer.
In conversation with De Gelderlander, Carlos Aalbers, technical director of NEC, discusses the contract situation of a number of players. Mattsson is also discussed, the trendsetter of NEC in the first half of the season.
The Dane is still in Nijmegen until next summer, and he therefore does not want to extend his contract. Mattsson hopes to be able to take a step higher after this season.
“Magnus has indicated that after three years at the NEC he thinks it is a good time to take a step. That is his right,” said Aalbers.
However, the current number eight in the Eredivisie does not have to fear that Mattsson will leave for free. The club can extend his contract for another year, which means that an interested club will still have to transfer an amount next summer.
That is why it is not obvious that NEC will say goodbye to the club’s top scorer of this season (nine goals) this month. Aalbers: “It must be an amount that we cannot say ‘no’ to if we want to let someone go.”
Mattsson was acquired by NEC in 2021 from the Danish Silkeborg IF. He has so far played 74 official matches on behalf of the Nijmegen team, in which he scored 19 goals and 8 hits. He is of great value to his team, especially this season.
ESPN analyst Kees Luijckx also sees the latter, who linked Mattsson to Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV during Voetbalpraat in December. “I think he can certainly handle a top club in the Netherlands. I think he has a lot of control for his position. He is very agile with the ball, can score, provide assists and run. Because the latter is also asked a lot of you these days: putting pressure on. He can keep that up for ninety minutes,” said the former defender.
