NEC has already played four cup finals, but has never won one. The Nijmegen team last reached the final in 2000 and lost 2-0 to Roda JC. NEC also missed out on winning the cup in 1994 (2-1 against Feyenoord), 1983 (twice 3-1 against Ajax) and 1973 (2-0 against NAC).

Cambuur can become the first First Division club in thirty years to reach the cup final. The Frisians can follow in the footsteps of NEC, which was the last First Divisionist in the final in 1994. In addition to NEC, FC Volendam (1958), DHC (1962), PEC Zwolle (1977), Helmond Sport (1985), RBC Roosendaal (1986), FC Den Bosch (1991) and sc Heerenveen (1993) also reached the KNVB cup final as First Division club.
