NEC – PEC Zwolle 29-10-24

PEC Zwolle is awfully close to the second round of the KNVB Cup when it visits NEC in Nijmegen. The Zwolle team took the lead twice, but saw the home team force extra time in minute 89 (2-2). Things go wrong, resulting in elimination (4-3).

With Thierry Lutonda in the team for Damian van der Haar and Filip Krastev for the suspended Younes Namli, PEC started more than well in Nijmegen. The Zwolle team let the ball do the work and that resulted in the opening goal after more than fifteen minutes of play. An excellent combination between Dylan Mbayo and Jamiro Monteiro led to a cross from Mbayo. Monteiro capably rounded off the opportunity: 0-1.

PEC had a nice shooting opportunity in the first half through Krastev, after a free kick was taken quickly. On the other hand, Jasper Schendelaar had to act on a header from Koki Ogawa. That striker had a nice opportunity, but shot wide in front of an open goal.

Equalizer

In the second half the game was back and forth. Schendelaar was able to save Bram Nuytinck’s header from the corner, while Jamiro Monteiro almost scored his second of the evening after a long kick from the same Zwolle goalie. Just when a second Zwolle goal seemed to be in the making, the home team leveled. Sontje Hansen shot the ball into the goal via Aertssen: 1-1.

Schendelaar and Vente

PEC was taken aback for a moment and Schendelaar had to act on shots from distance from Calvin Verdonk, among others, but did so competently. Out of nowhere, Johnny Jansen’s men took the lead again. A beautiful cross from Anouar El Azzouzi was beautifully headed in by Dylan Vente: 1-2.

In the final phase, NEC tried to force an extension. PEC gave little away, but they finally succeeded in the 89th minute. A header from Ogawa was too much for Schendelaar: 2-2. In the seven minutes of injury time, both teams were unable to make a breakthrough, resulting in extra time.

Extension

In the first half of extra time, Davy van den Berg decided to deliver a devastating strike from distance. Goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel was able to prevent the 2-3 with a nice reflex. It turned out to be the prelude to even more opportunities, because Kaj de Rooij and Thomas Buitink also seemed to have the 2-3 on their shoe.

It didn’t fall, so it suddenly fell on the other side via substitute Shiogai. Not much later, Ogawa also made it 4-2 via another shot that changed direction.

Penalty used

PEC then tried in the second half of extra time with Braydon Manu as fresh force. Buitink took another penalty after a handball from a NEC player (4-3), but was unable to force a penalty shootout.

On Sunday, PEC Zwolle will be hunting for a result in the IJsselderby. When visiting Go Ahead Eagles, the kick-off is in Deventer at 12:15 p.m.
