“Throw the cup, throw the cup!”, shouted Mery Bas at the end of her performance in the final of the Benidorm Fest 2024. The singer of Nebulossa, the group that will represent Spain in Eurovision 2024, wanted to end ‘Zorra’ with a wink to the former politician Manuela Trasobares. A tribute that they already made in the video clip of the already Eurofan anthem and that refers to a mythical television moment from the late 90s.

The former councilor of the Geldo City Council, the first transgender in Spain, uttered this expression on the program Parle vosté, calle vosté on Channel 9 during a historic speech on Spanish television. And Trasobares starred in one of the most memorable moments of the Valencian regional chain.

“Today’s boycott, shameful!”: There is no end of Benidorm Fest without eurodrama

“A tribute to all those women who nothing and no one made them silence. For the brave and the rebellious, for those who broke glasses on rigorous live television after launching a powerful message when few people still dared. This goes for all the Manuelas Trasobares “wrote the group in an Instagram post when presenting their video clip. “Thank you to those who wonder why. To those who have spent a lifetime putting their body and soul into it. Thank you Manuela,” they noted in another post on the well-known social network.

Trasobares’ plea in defense of the rights and visibility of trans women, and all women, went beyond the local level in a matter of days. And at that time social networks did not yet exist. The former politician filled the country’s media headlines by starring in one of the most intense speeches in the history of television: fury and enthusiasm crossed the screen, becoming a symbol of the fight for equality.

Trasobares even threw a drink live to emphasize his claim to the surprise and applause of those present on the set. Something that Nebulossa wanted to refer to in the final of the Benidorm Fest 2024 and thus pay tribute to all the “Manuelas Trasobares”.

Trasobares was invited to talk about transsexuality in October 1996 during the debate on Parle vosté, calle vosté on the Valencian public channel without knowing that it was becoming a symbol of the fight for equality. “I am a woman, Manuela Trasobares and no one, no one can say otherwise,” she said in said space. In addition, she sang to demonstrate that she was also a renowned mezzo-soprano, trained in Sofia (Bulgaria), who had walked on the stages of the Liceo in Barcelona, the Scala in Milan and the Palacio de la Música in Valencia.

A historical moment on television in Spain that Nebulossa wanted to remind viewers, and has discovered to those who were unaware of it, in ‘Zorra’.
