The appearance of bats in the Indiana Pacers game may have exposed people to rabies
Officials warned anyone who came into contact with a racket during the Indiana Pacers-Los Angeles Clippers game last week could be exposed to rabies. Indiana health officials are urging attendees who may have come into contact with a racket that flew through Bankers Life Fieldhouse during Thursday’s game to call their health care provider and get a rabies vaccine.

zoo in Nebraska Tell 186 guests they may have been exposed to rabies after wild bats who tested positive for the virus infiltrated the pelvis.
“The bats we identified are the little brown bats, a common type of Nebraska bat that anyone can find in their backyard or attic,” said Dr. Sarah Woodhouse, director of animal health at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, said in a statement Friday. “It’s not uncommon for a wild bat to get rabies, which is why you should never touch a wild bat directly.”
Woodhouse added that guests who are at the zoo during the day shouldn’t worry because bats are nocturnal, but overnight guests should receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which the zoo will pay for.

PEP is Recommended by the Center for Disease Control For both caustic and non-caustic exposure to rabies infected bats. Individuals receive a dose of rabies vaccine and human rabies immunoglobulin on day 1, then a dose of rabies vaccine on days 3, 7, and 14.

The fear of rabies started when a camp guest woke up all night and found a bat near her head on the evening of July 4. A team at the zoo examined and found a total of seven bats, one of whom tested positive for rabies.
Although the woman had no bites or scratches, the zoo still recommends that she and other guests who were at the zoo at the time be treated for rabies.
“People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal.” CDC explains:. “It is also possible, but rarely, for humans to acquire rabies from exposure to bites, including scrapes, scrapes, or open wounds exposed to saliva or other potentially infectious material from an animal with rabies.”
