Jaime Nebot, leader of the Social Christian Party (PSC), spoke again about the Purga case, three days after Pablo Muentes, former assemblyman and member of his party, along with eleven other people, mostly judges, were arrested for alleged organized crime. In a video broadcast on his social networks, Nebot rejected the accusations against him, referring to them as “slander,” and dismissed claims that implicate his political organization in alleged influence over the courts. He assured to respect the independence of the functions of the State and affirmed that he does not need to “manipulate justice.”
The former mayor of Guayaquil outlined his career as a lawyer and his private activities, emphasizing that he has not practiced law for decades nor has he had clients in litigation. Nebot vehemently denied any interference in the judicial system, stating: “I do not need to manipulate justice or get involved in its tortuous paths, there is no judge or prosecutor who can say otherwise.”
In relation to the Purge case, Nebot highlighted that his involvement in the fight against insecurity led to the dismissal of 17 prosecutors whom he accused of releasing criminals quickly. Additionally, he recalled a past incident in which he claimed he acted against a judge who allied himself with an alleged mafia.
About Pablo Muentes
Regarding the situation of Pablo Muentes, a figure close to the PSC, Nebot emphasized the importance of respect for the law and due process. He stated that “no one is above the law” and stressed that each citizen must answer for his own actions, urging the Prosecutor’s Office to prove his accusations and the accused to exercise their right to defense. Furthermore, he confirmed that his legislative bench will not support the dismissal of prosecutor Diana Salazar, contrary to the intentions of his Correista allies.
