These are not yet the levels of 2019, but the recovery of tourism is confirmed in New York. Last year, Big Apple welcomed 56.4 million travelers, a figure up 71.4% compared to 2021, still very marked by travel restrictions linked to the health crisis.
A total of 8.9 million international tourists were welcomed in 2022. New York City’s top five international outbound markets were the United Kingdom (754,000), Canada (656,000), Brazil ( 520,000) and Spain (413,000). France ranks third, with 607,000 travellers.
For the destination, this activity marks the return to 85% of the record occupancy levels of 2019. Hotel performance, for its part, increased throughout 2022 and should reach nearly 32 million nights sold. (-20% compared to 2019).
The economic impact is estimated at over US$40 billion in direct visitor spending, or approximately $60 billion in total economic impact for the year.
Billions invested in airports
And the forecasts for 2023 look encouraging according to the Tourist Office. New York City hopes to attract 61.7 million visitors this year, or 93% of 2019 levels. To achieve this, Big Apple intends to capitalize on a busy events calendar. The year will be marked in particular by the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop music through numerous events. A new museum will soon pay tribute to the culture of the South Bronx, the cradle of hip-hop. It will open in 2024.
The Museum of the City of New York will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. The museum has amassed a collection of over 750,000 objects including photographs, prints, costumes, paintings and more celebrating the city’s past, present and future.
Another highlight: in the spring of 2023, the Costume Institute will highlight the work of Karl Lagerfeld by presenting the exhibition Karl Lagerfeld : A Line of Beauty. The designer’s body of work will be showcased with creations dating from the 1950s through to his latest collection of 2019. Over 150 pieces will be on display.
Significant investments should also boost tourism growth in the coming years. New York injects several billion dollars into its airports. In December 2022, JFK International Airport unveiled a new Terminal 8, developed by American Airlines and British Airways and offering travelers new premium lounges, improved baggage systems and premium check-in space. The $9.5 billion International Terminal 1, meanwhile, is set to open in 2026. It will feature a complete overhaul of airport routes and new services. More than 11,000 hotel rooms will also be added to the city’s inventory over the next five years.
