The Japanese telecom provider KDDI had to deal with a malfunction last weekend, which prevented almost 40 million people from calling and using the internet. That writes ABC News† Services were largely restored on Monday morning, although some customers are still experiencing outages.
KDDI is the second largest provider in Japan. A malfunction arose during work on Saturday morning, which continued for the rest of the weekend. This made calling, texting and surfing the Internet impossible.
It didn’t just lead to problems for people with a mobile subscription. The parcel delivery services were also disrupted due to the problems, several ATMs no longer worked and weather stations were no longer able to retrieve information.
Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara thinks it is “extremely regrettable” that the services of the Japanese provider were unavailable for so long. Kihara calls the mobile infrastructure “critical for social and economic activity”.
According to him, the government takes the malfunction seriously and KDDI is urged to provide a thorough explanation. He also says he expects the provider to think about possible compensation to customers. KDDI director Makoto Takahashi apologized on Sunday for the inconvenience.
