Nearly 300 inmates flee Nigerian prison after floods

Madrid., Nearly 300 inmates have escaped from the prison in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, following flooding that is affecting the area during the rainy season, which began three months ago.

The Nigerian Correctional Service said in a statement shared on its Facebook page that 281 inmates have escaped and seven of them have been recaptured.

“The flood brought down the walls of prison facilities, including the Maiduguri medium security detention centre, as well as staff quarters in the city,” said the Service’s Head of Public Relations, Abubajar Umar, speaking from Abuja.

He also said that at the time of the evacuation of inmates to a secure facility, they recorded the missing prisoners, although he stressed that “the service has their data in its custody, including biometric data” and is therefore working with other agencies and has activated police deployments.

In this same area, a few days ago, a dam burst, leaving 37 dead, 60 injured and 414,000 homeless. The UN also warned of the impact on hospitals, schools and markets, as well as critical infrastructure, including bridges. Residents warned that the dam was at its maximum capacity due to the heavy rains.
