Nearly 100 cases of monkey pox worldwide, WHO expects increase

According to the health organization, those who have been in close contact with infected people who already had symptoms are most at risk. This concerns, for example, care providers.

They must be adequately informed, says the WHO, in order to stop the outbreak. The UN organization also says it will come up with additional advice within a few days.

The countries where the virus has been diagnosed according to the WHO are the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Canada, the United States and Australia. But Israel and Switzerland have also reported cases. According to the WHO, among the patients are relatively many men who have sex with other men.

Festival in Belgium

The scale of the outbreak is becoming “clearer and clearer”, Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst wrote on Twitter. “This has never been seen with monkey pox viruses.” He reported on Saturday that the virus has been diagnosed in a fourth person in Belgium.

According to Van Ranst, this contamination, like the other three, also has a link to the international gay festival Darklands, which took place in Antwerp earlier this month. “It is important that everyone who attended the Darklands festival remains vigilant for any symptoms,” he warns.

A-disease

The monkeypox virus has been diagnosed in two people in the Netherlands. The virus has been classified as an A disease on the advice of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), which means that doctors are obliged to report infections or suspicions thereof immediately.

The monkeypox virus normally occurs only in western and central Africa.
