Tamara Milville (GNE) and Bernard Pasquereau (REP. AL.LAB), at the foot of the nest box in Basse-Goulaine. (L’Hebdo de Sèvre et Maine)
A Lower Goulaine, the nest box project is restarting for a third campaign and the great tits still have the leading role in streaming videos.
Conducted by GNE (Goulaine Nature Environnement) and REP.AL.LAB (Friendly secular repair laboratory), the team gained even more experience.
For this year, the birdhouse was completely redesigned and rebuilt in view of the damage caused by birds to the equipment. This one being considered as an intruder.
Nanocomputer
The nest box was thus enlarged and the entrance hole deported to allow the creation of a technical room in which we can find the nano-computer Raspberry Pi and the wi-fi system allowing all the images to be transmitted to an external operator who stores and sorts to create videos on a blog (https ://repallabbg.wixsite.com/nichoir3-0).
As for the retransmission, it is done streaming from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. We can witness, live, the life of this pair of great tits around their nest and then the young.
Three high definition mini cameras
One of the technical speakers explains:
“This year, there are three cameras. These are high definition mini cameras. There is one outside and two inside: one under the roof and the other along the bulkhead of the technical room in order to have a better overview. The videos are viewed by a team of 10 people who make a choice and then three others finalize them and send them to the site. This year we have a naturalist who comments on the images. “
Enlightened amateur naturalist Tamara Milville says:
“An egg is laid every day. And if there is the same result as the other years, we will go up to 9 eggs. This can be larger, even up to 12 eggs. But already with 9 eggs, it takes between 500 and 900 preys per day to feed the young and most of this food is represented by caterpillars. “
Severe discussion between two females
Tamara Milville continues:
“The other day we were able to witness a harsh discussion between two females in the nest. Indeed, one of them wanted to take the place of the other but the latter vigorously defended his home. “
And for their growth, “the young need a high protein diet because after only 12 to 14 days of brooding, they are born and after 3 weeks they fly. The adventure is very fast, ”notes the naturalist.
