Near Earth, Scientists Discover New Multiplanetary System

JawaPos.com – A team of astronomers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with other astronomers around the world, claims to have identified two rocky planets orbiting the stars, which are dubbed HD 260655b and 260655c. These planets are located in a system that is only 33 light years from Earth.

According to data and estimates, the planets are rocky and have an approximate size of Earth. The planet HD 260655b is also estimated to be 1.2 to twice as large as Earth, and slightly denser, and has three times the mass of the planet we live in today.

Through its official website, MIT explains, the translational movements of these planets are quite fast. According to estimates, the planet HD 260655b orbits in just 2.8 days. Planet HD 260655c, on the other hand, orbits it every 5.7 days.

With orbits very close to the stars, the surfaces of these planets are very hot. They can reach temperatures of 710 K (about 436 degrees Celsius) on the innermost planet and 560 K (about 286 degrees Celsius) for the planet with the outermost orbit.

Thanks to this temperature, they are considered uninhabitable. Furthermore, given these circumstances, it is absolutely impossible to have any kind of water or liquid in this celestial body.

However, researchers are very enthusiastic about this discovery, especially about the possibility of studying this new world. The conclusion about the existence of these planets was made by Michelle Kunimoto, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.
