CelebritiesNe-Yo (43) has apologized for his criticism of parents who have transgender children undergo gender reassignment surgery at a young age. The American singer recognizes after “a lot of thought” that his comments could be perceived as “insensitive and offensive,” he writes on social media.
Ne-Yo, 43, said in an interview with news website VladTV, which went online Saturday, that he didn’t understand why parents let their children make “life-changing” decisions. “When your little boy comes up to you and says, Daddy, I want to be a girl. And you just let him have his way? He’s 5. If you let a 5-year-old boy eat candy all day, he’s going to do it. Since when is it a good idea to let a 5-year-old, a 6-year-old, a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision on their own? When did that happen? I do not understand.”
After criticism of his comments, Ne-Yo responded in an Instagram post on Saturday that he is not “condemning” anyone but that he has his own “feelings” on the matter. “I don’t agree with some of your ideals, but I love you no less.”

On Sunday evening, the singer decided to apologize. “I have always been a champion of love and inclusion in the LGBTIQ+ community, so I understand how my comments may have been interpreted as insensitive and offensive,” he writes on X, formerly Twitter.
Ne-Yo, who has seven children of his own, also promises that he will be better informed about the subject of gender identity. “So that I can approach future conversations with more empathy.”
