‘Ndrangheta massacre, hearing in Cassation on 16 December

(ANSA) – REGGIO CALABRIA, 07 OCT – The “‘Ndrangheta massacre” trial will arrive in the Supreme Court on 16 December. In fact, the hearing has been set before the Sixth Section of the Supreme Court in which the appeal presented by the defenders of the Cosa Nostra boss Giuseppe Graviano and Rocco Santo Filippone, believed to be a member of the Piromalli gang of Gioia Tauro, will be discussed, both sentenced to ‘life sentence. Graviano and Filippone are accused of the double murder of the carabinieri Antonino Fava and Vincenzo Garofalo, victims of an ambush on 18 January 1994 along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, at the Scilla junction. In the reasons for the sentence of the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Reggio Calabria, sharing the accusatory system supported by the public prosecutors Giuseppe Lombardo and Walter Ignazitto, “the proven connections that have unraveled over the years between criminal organizations and Masonic environments were underlined and politicians, in an evident convergence and mix of interests which aimed at the common intent of destabilizing the State and replacing the old ruling class which, in the eyes of the aforementioned, had not satisfied their ‘desires'”. The lawyers Giuseppe Aloisio and Federico Vianelli, defenders of Graviano, ask that the Court of Cassation annul the sentence of the Court of Assizes of Appeal and, in their appeal, in addition to maintaining that the reasoning behind the ruling is “contradictory and illogical”, they contest the statements by justice collaborators Gaspare Spatuzza, Antonino Lo Giudice and Consolato Villani. Declarations in reference to which, according to Graviano’s lawyers, “the Court failed to examine the reliability of the collaborators, as well as the constancy and convergence of their statements”. At the same hearing on 16 December, the appeal presented by lawyers Guido Contestabile and Salvatore Staiano, defenders of Rocco Santo Filippone, will also be discussed. (HANDLE).
