Austin Stowell as young Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins”CBS
CBS has released a first trailer for the prequel “NCIS: Origins”, which follows the career of the younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs (in voice-overs: Mark Harmon) from “NCIS” at the beginning of his career at Naval Criminal Investigative Service In the USA, the series begins broadcasting on October 14th. A German home is not yet known.
The action begins in 1991, when Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) has just been appointed as a special agent. The former Marine Gibbs had recently lost his wife and daughter in an assassination attempt by a Mexican drug lord, which was addressed in “NCIS”. As a result, Gibbs had recently failed the psychological fitness for duty examination.
Gibbs begins his service at the still young NCIS headquarters in Camp Pendleton (California), where the ex-Marine, sniper and highly decorated Iraq veteran joins Mike Franks’ (Kyle Schmid) team. This character is already very familiar to series fans from numerous seasons of the main series.
The other main actors include Mariel Molino (Special Agent Lala Dominguez), Daniel Bellomy (Special Agent Granville “Granny” Dawson), Diany Rodriguez (Special Agent Vera Strickland), Tyla Abercrumbie (Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Sullivan), Caleb Foote (Special Agent Benjamin “Randy” Randolf), Robert Taylor (Jethro’s father Jackson Gibbs), Lori Petty (forensic pathologist Dr. Lenora Friedman) and Bobby Moynihan (chemist and head of the forensic laboratory Woodrow “Woody” Browne).
While the series introduces some new characters, it also has to overcome a few hurdles. On the one hand, it was previously established that Gibbs had no contact with his father at that time, who nevertheless appears as an important character in the series. In addition, the series must also establish why Gibbs is telling this story now.
Harmon also serves as executive producer on “NCIS: Origins.” The series is based on an idea by Harmon’s son Sean Harmon, who played the younger version of his father in some flashbacks on “NCIS,” but is “only” on board as a producer here. Longtime “NCIS” producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North serve as showrunners.
