Transfer Portal Shakes Up Utah College Football Programs
The transfer portal has ignited a flurry of movement among college football athletes, with Utah’s programs feeling the effects. With a streamlined 20-day window open from December 9th to 28th, players are making rapid decisions about their futures, even before the bowl season kicks off.
Here’s a look at some key players leaving Utah schools and seeking new opportunities:
BYU:
- Kody Epps: A prominent BYU receiver, Epps surprised many with his initial portal entry two years ago, sparked by tempting NIL (Name, Image, and Likeliness) opportunities. While he ultimately returned, it seems his heart wasn’t fully in it. Injuries have hampered his recent seasons, leading to limited playing time. Now, the graduate transfer is officially leaving Provo.
"Eye-y," said sources close to Epps, recounting his flirtation with NIL offers back in 2023.
- Jackson Bowers: Once a highly touted recruit, Bowers couldn’t quite find his footing with the Cougars. His departure further depletes BYU’s already thin tight end position. With Ryner Swanson set to embark on a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the team faces a significant need to rebuild at the position.
- Micah Harper: An impactful defensive player in 2022, Harper’s career was derailed by an ACL tear in 2023. Though he attempted a comeback in 2024, finding his groove proved challenging, leading to reduced playing time behind younger recruits. The graduate transfer is now exploring options beyond BYU.
Utah:
- Jaylon Glover: Glover made headlines off the field with his bold declaration of the BYU rivalry as the "Cold War," but his on-field contributions for Utah have been relatively modest this season with limited carries. Despite exceeding 900 rushing yards in previous seasons, Glover is now looking for a new home.
Utah State:
- Teague Andersen: Andersen, a Lehi native, faced challenges in his time with the Aggies, starting seven games on the offensive line. The talented offensive lineman has decided to seek a fresh start elsewhere.
These early departures signal a shifting landscape in Utah college football. With the transfer portal window tightening, player movement is expected to remain a significant aspect of the offseason.
