[NCAA] The Draft Barometer: Dallas, Your Merciless World

Every Sunday, the editorial staff of TDActu offers you an update on university players. Who performed well and who disappointed? Because it’s never too early to prepare for the 2022 draft, a weekly focused on the individual performance of future NFL players. Only those eligible for the 2022 draft are discussed here.

Week 6

A Saturday dominated by the historic rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas (find the presentation of this match here) as well as some highly anticipated shocks like Auburn-Georgia, Iowa-Penn State and Texas A & M-Alabama.

sunny weather

  • Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss : 287 yards (14/21) and 2 touchdowns to the pass, 94 yards and 2 touchdowns to the ground
  • Carson Strong, QB, Nevada : 377 yards (25/32), 6 touchdowns et 1 interception
  • DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas : 8 tackles including 1 sack, 1 blocked punt, a covered fumble, 2 QB hurries (pressures)
  • Isaiah Likely, TE, Coastal Carolina : 232 yards et 4 touchdowns
  • Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State : 120 yards et 2 touchdowns

Matt Corral (Ole Miss) is currently the favorite (with Sam Howell from North Carolina and Carson Strong of Nevada) to be the 1st quarterback chosen in the 2022 draft. In a crazy match against Arkansas, he once again showed why: he distributed the ball to 9 different players and one minute from the end, while the two teams were tied, he throws the receiver Braylon Sanders in orbit, will follow a decisive touchdown of 68 yards. He still has several high-stakes games such as those against LSU, Auburn and of course the derby against Mississippi State, to confirm. Regarding his odds for the draft, the match of November 06 against the Liberty of Malik Willis (QB) is already circled in red on all NFL Scout Notebooks.

Another quarterback standing out this Saturday: Carson Strong (Nevada). Admittedly, the opposition was relative against New Mexico State but his precision (25 of 32) and his 6 touchdowns remind everyone that he must be followed for the 2022 draft.

Again, the linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (Texas) shone brightly: tackles, a sack, a blocked punt, a covered fumble, he was everywhere facing Oklahoma! In 2020 already, he had shown a lot of talent with 60 tackles including 8 for losses and 7 defended assists (2 INTs) in only 10 games. Very athletic player and recruited to play safety, he is a linebacker offering a profile similar to that of Isaiah Simmons (Cardinals).

Likely has already been honored in our columns but it was in the “under the radar” category, that reserved for “sleepers”, those players who will host the Saturday of the draft (rounds 4 to 7). After already 4 touchdowns in the 5 previous matches, he doubled his total in the 6th! Tight-end more receiver than blocker, it inevitably presents some limits but its capacity to be an air threat will undoubtedly allure a franchise before the end of Friday of the draft (turns 2 and 3).

The receiver Chris Olave (Ohio State) confirms once again that he is a candidate for the 1st round of the 2022 draft. Excellent track runner and with enough speed, he will be in the spotlight on our site this Tuesday, October 12th.

Mentions :

  • Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina : 365 yards (18/23), 4 touchdowns
  • Desmond Ridder, QB, Cincinnati : 259 yards (22/30), 3 touchdowns
  • Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas : 136 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State : 84 yards et 2 touchdowns
  • Drake London, WR, USC : 162 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama : 146 yards et 2 touchdowns
  • Jalen Wydermyer, TE, Texas A&M : 73 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Kennedy Brooks, RB, Oklahoma : 212 yards et 2 touchdowns
  • Kenneth Walker, RB, Michigan State : 232 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Chris Rodriguez, RB, Kentucky : 147 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Rasheed Walker, OT, Penn State
  • Perrion Winfrey, DT, Oklahoma : 3 tackles including 1 sack
  • Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia : 5 tackles
  • Travon Walker, DT, Georgia : 4 tackles including 1 sack
  • DeMarvin Leal, DT, Texas A&M : 7 tackles
  • Kingsley Enagbare, DE, South Carolina : 5 tackles including 1 sack
  • Nick Bonitto, Edge, Oklahoma : 5 tackles including 1.5 sacks and 3 QB hurries
  • Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia : 5 tackles and 1 interception
  • Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah : 8 tackles including 1 for loss, 1 pass defended
  • Alontae Taylor, CB, Tennessee : 2 tackles and 3 defended passes
  • Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, CB, TCU : 4 tackles and 1 interception returned for a touchdown
  • Jermaine Waller, CB, Virginia Tech : 5 tackles and 1 interception returned for a touchdown

Rainy weather

  • Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma : 111 yards (8/15), 1 interception
  • Malik Willis, QB, Liberty : 222 yards (17/30), 2 touchdowns and 3 pass interceptions, 80 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground
  • Riley Moss, CB, Iowa : 1 tackle and 1 interception

Considered before the season, as the favorite to be the first quarterback chosen in the 2022 draft, Spencer Rattler (cover photo) had the opportunity to make up for an average start to the season, in one of the most watched games of a college season. On the field of the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, he was intercepted, made a fumble and then ended up on the bench! He will still have other opportunities to raise his rating with the NFL scouts. Or not. Entered in the middle of the second quarter, the 5-star rookie Caleb Williams showed why he was considered the 7th high school student in the country in 2021 (2nd QB). With 2 touchdowns thrown and 1 on the ground, he has largely contributed to one of the most spectacular “remountada” of recent years! Spencer Rattler has to worry.

Another quarterback candidate for the 1st round in 2022, Malik Willis (Liberty) struggled against modest Middle Tennessee. Admittedly, his team has imposed itself, admittedly he has as usual add production by wearing the leather but 3 interceptions against an average opposition, makes his record mediocre this week.

The cornerback Riley Moss (Iowa) was once again decisive against Penn State, signing his 4th interception of the season (10th in his career). But right after it, while he was celebrating it, he injured his knee. The duration of his unavailability is not yet known but it would be a blow, for an Iowa team in great shape and for the player in view of the 2022 draft.

Mentions :

  • Taulia Tagovailoa, QB, Maryland : 279 yards (28/39), 2 touchdowns et 2 interceptions
  • Austin Jones, RB, Stanford : 13 yards on 7 carries (1.9)

Under the radars

  • Grant Morgan, LB, Arkansas : 13 tackles
  • Olakunle Fatukasi, LB, Rutgers : 9 tackles including 2 for losses, 1 pass defended
  • Reed Blankenship, S, Middle Tennessee : 9 tackles including 1 for loss

After 110 tackles in 9 games in 2020 (including 7.5 for losses), the linebacker Grant Morgan (Arkansas) confirms his talent with 50 tackles (4.5 for loss) in 6 games in 2021. His lack of size (1m80 for 106 kilos) places him more in this category “under the radar”, that of players destined for the Saturday of the draft (rounds 4 to 7). But his incessant activity will allow him to get a chance in an NFL camp next spring.

Another linebacker to be confirmed, Olakunle Fatukasi (Rutgers). The only New Jersey player to survive the debacle against Michigan State. Player offering an attractive mix of size and speed (1m88 for 108 kilos), he is a tackle machine: 90 including 9.5 for loss in 2020 (9 games) and already 56 including 8.5 for loss in 6 games in 2021 ! Very athletic player, younger brother of the defensive lineman of the Jets, he also shows progress in 2021 in coverage and a draft in the 3rd round in 2022 now seems accessible.

Last defender in the spotlight, the safety Reed Blankenship (Middle Tennessee). If he couldn’t prevent his team’s loss to Liberty, he has news that his instincts and athleticism should give him a chance in the NFL. 55 tackles and 3 assists defended in 6 games in 2021.

Mentions :

  • Jerome Ford, RB, Cincinnati : 149 yards et 2 touchdowns
  • Rachaad White, RB, Arizona State : 96 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Alec Pierce, WR, Cincinnati : 93 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Victor Tucker, WR, Charlotte : 92 yards et 1 touchdown
  • Cole Turner, TE, Nevada : 26 yards et 2 touchdowns
  • SaRodorick Thompson, RB, Texas Tech : 118 yards et 3 touchdowns
  • CJ Brewer, DT, Coastal Carolina : 2 tackles including 1 sack, 1 interception
  • Jermaine Johnson, DE, Florida State : 6 tackles including 1 sack
  • Dorian Williams, LB, Tulane : 9 tackles
  • Quay Walker, LB, Georgia : 5 tackles including 2 for loss
  • Damone Clark, LB, LSU : 14 tackles including 1 for loss
  • Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati : 6 tackles and 1 interception
  • Jack Jones, CB, Arizona state : 4 tackles and 2 defended passes including 1 interception
  • Matt Hankins, CB, Iowa : 5 tackles and 1 interception
  • Otis Reese, S, Ole Miss : 11 tackles
  • Trey Dean, S, Florida : 7 tackles and 1 interception
  • BJ Foster, S, Texas : 8 tackles including 1 for loss, 1 interception

Action of the week

This week, more than an action, it is the scenario of the week: catastrophic for Oklahoma and fabulous for Texas. During this historic rivalry, the match started very strong and from the 1st offensive game, the quarterback Casey Thompson throws a side pass to the novice catcher Xavier Worthy, and it reaches the end zone after a 75-yard run! 7-0 for Texas. The ball is returned to Oklahoma but after 3 unsuccessful attempts, they are forced to clear the ball. Yes but the punt is countered! Texas therefore recovers possession just 2 yards from the goal line. And on the 2nd attempt, the superstar Bijan Robinson (RB) takes the leather for a second touchdown. 14-0 after less than 2 minutes of play! But after this nightmarish start, it was the Oklahoma fans who slept better at the end of one of the most shocking games of the past 10 years!

Below, 3 tweets showing these three games.
