We recently told you about Seton Hall through his Frenchy, senior interior Alexis Yetna. But the Pirates deserve their mention at the start of the season because they are for the moment undefeated, three wins in three games, after having achieved the feat of going to beat Michigan on its floor (67-65).
Attack pirates
Like Marquette against Illinois, Seton Hall took advantage of the start of the season, and the big teams still in the process of breaking in to get an “upset” behind 16 points from Jared Rhoden, plus 13 points per header for the two substitutes, Tray Jackson and Bryce Aiken. For the third time in three games, it is therefore a different player who finished top scorer of the Pirates.
In the match in the match, between the two Frenchmen involved, Alexis Yetna (5 points, 4 rebounds) won his duel from a distance against Moussa Diabaté (1 point, 2 rebounds, 1 against). Michigan had yet been able to count on a solid game from its star pivot, Hunter Dickinson (18 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists), well helped by the double-double of Devante Jones (11 points, 12 rebounds).
Eli Brooks (17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) also had a good game but the freshman Caleb Houstan passed through with a small 1/9 in address for 4 points and 3 assists. At 3/15 at 3-points and only 9 points from their bench, the Wolverines of Juwan Howard cracked in the finish and thus concede their first setback of the season.
BYU explose les Ducks
It is a semi tradition on the Portland side. The Phil Knight Invitational tries to bring together top college teams every season to meet on the Moda Center floor. In the past, we had seen Killian Tillie and Rui Hachimura’s Gonzaga, or James Wiseman’s Memphis. This year, the tournament came down to a single encounter, between BYU and Oregon.
And, to say the least, the locals in Oregon have been abused! Stuck at 18 points in the first half, the Ducks were unable to compete with the Cougars led by Alex Barcello (25 points) and Te’Jon Lucas (12 points). Yet ranked 12th according to the AP ranking in the country, Oregon was overtaken by events, dropped to 33 points and largely defeated (81-49). By the way, BYU is the first unranked team to put 30 points in the sight of a Top 15 team since 1993!
“I am disappointed with our players but even more disappointed with myself”, commented Dana Altman after this disappointment. “I say that sincerely. I turned against myself because there is no way, with the talent we have in this team, that such a result could happen. “
Maryland’s wedding, Memphis serene
Like BYU in Oregon, George Mason went to play spoilers in Maryland. Under the leadership of his new coach, Kim English, George Mason defeated the Terrapins on their floor, in what is quite simply the Patriots’ first victory against Maryland!
D’Shawn Schwartz (24 points) and DeVon Cooper (16 points) were George Mason’s spearheads against awkward Terrapins at 3-points (9/28) and also on throws (7/13). Full of confidence, George Mason finished a sparkling 12/24 behind the arc to pocket a fourth win in as many games.
In addition, everything is rolling for Memphis who notched a third victory in as many games, easily beating St. Louis Tuesday night (90-74). The two Tigers freshmen, Emoni Bates (16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists average) and Jalen Duren (13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks average), meet expectations for the moment.
Eddy Kayouloud shows himself against the champions
If there was not really a game between Central Arkansas and Baylor last night in Waco, Frenchman Eddy Kayouloud has chosen his moment to shine. With 14 points and 7 rebounds, the junior winger confirmed his rise to power (after his 10 points against Butler for his second game). He quite simply finished top scorer of his team, against the armada of Baylor who tied a historic record in interceptions with 21 catches.
We will also note the good start to the season of Josh Mballa who managed his first double-double of the season with Buffalo who won against North Texas (69-66). The French interior has accumulated 17 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes, after an encouraging first outing with 13 points and 8 rebounds to open its season.
In the same vein, all is well for Maxime Raynaud at Stanford. Integrated into the five major since his double-double face in Santa Clara, the French interior has chained two good games, including 11 points and 6 rebounds against San Jose State, then 9 points and 3 rebounds against Valparaiso, two wins in a row .
