NC 988 line handles more than 3,000 crisis cases in Spanish

Raleigh.- In the last year, the Suicide and Crisis Prevention Line 988 answered 3,118 calls, text messages or chat contacts from people in the state who asked for help in Spanish.

From July 2023 to June 2024, this number of people called for help in this language, according to information from the state Department of Health and Human Services.

These are people whose first language is Spanish and who needed help to deal with a crisis.

In the mentioned period, The 988 line answered 112,757 calls, text messages or chat messages throughout the state.

Some of those requests came from veterans, people in the LGBTQ+ community and people who requested assistance in Spanish, according to the department.

Of the total mentioned, 3 out of 100 were in Spanish.

For two years, the 988 line has been offering help 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Through calls, texts and chats, trained crisis counselors can help people experiencing a suicidal, substance abuse or mental health crisis, or any other type of emotional distress.

The Department said that of the total number of contacts recorded, 45.5%, or 51,304, were from people who called back to the helpline.

Helpline for depression and anxiety is requested

Most of the people who asked for help from the 988 line did so for issues related to a interpersonal or family situation, depression, self-harm and anxiety.

Of the 112,757 calls, messages and chats, 65% were to address cases of this type.

“For many of the thousands of callers, 988 is a first step toward accessing the services and supports they need for long-term healing and recovery,” said Kelly Crosbie, director of NCDHHS’s Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services.

Young people aged 13 to 24 are the ones who use the internet the most

By age, those who most asked for help from the 988 line in the state were young people aged 13 to 24.

From July 2023 to June 2024, 9,667 calls were recorded from young people aged 18 to 24.

There are 1,035,623 young people in this age range living in the state, so 9.3 out of every thousand called the helpline.

While 6,490 teenagers aged 13 to 17 also asked for support.

This figure is equivalent to 9.7 out of every thousand young people in this age range who live in the state.
