NBA: Zion Williamson to be prioritised for COVID-19 vaccine due to his weight

The New Orleans Pelicans are to begin vaccinating their players against COVID-19, with franchise star Zion Williamson set to receive his dose as a priority because of his weight.

The state of Louisiana extends the vaccine eligibility to people with a Body Mass Index of over 25, which is the cut-off point for being medically overweight, dependent on your height.

Williamson is such a unique physical specimen that a lot of his weight comes in the form of muscle, which is actually denser than fat tissue, so often weighs more and puts more strain on a person’s body and organs.

Now, Williamson is one of many NBA stars who fall into the clinically overweight category, simply because of their height and muscle mass, so this is not necessarily a reflection on the former No.1 draft pick’s lifestyle or diet.

The plans for players receiving the vaccine depend largely on their team and the state within which they reside. The Dallas Mavericks, for instance, are still in contact with Texas authorities as they await approval for their vaccination plans.
