Basketball legend and former NBA scoring record holder with 38.387 points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar received an honorary ring from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Erased from the shelves by LeBron James, the record for points scored in the NBA by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is nonetheless inscribed in legend. So much so that the Los Angeles Lakers, a franchise in which the 75-year-old former basketball player played between 1976 and 1989, would have decided to offer him a special ring on this occasion.
A 38-year-old record set in gold
According the TMZ website, the Californian franchise would have done it big to honor the old points record (38,387 points) held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for 38 years, by offering him a prestigious gold ring, set with 578 diamonds. On the jewel, commissioned by the franchise from jeweler Jason Arasheben, we can see the number 33, the symbolic number of KAJ during his career, as well as the “skyhook”, his emblematic shot.
Other details include his points record, now beaten by LeBron James with 38,390 points, the 38 years during which the record will have stood, as well as the date on which Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became the all-time leading scorer. Big League: April 5, 1984, dethroning Wilt Chamberlain at the time.
“The Lakers are a top notch organization and always appreciate and recognize players, old and new. We were very happy to help bring this ring to life and celebrate the career of one of the greatest players of all time,” Jason Arasheben, a jeweler known for his rings for NBA champions, told TMZ.
