Kimesha Williams, 39, and her friend Candace Townsell, 42, are facing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on multiple charges in the murder of 84-year-old Afaf Anis Assad. The two women were found guilty of murder, robbery and elder abuse in February after a month-long trial in Riverside County Superior Court.

Assad was found unconscious with a fractured skull and bleeding from the head in a bathroom at the Pechanga Resort Casino on August 31, 2019. Williams and Townsell reportedly viciously attacked the elderly woman and stole her purse, which contained $1,000. Williams had previously followed Assad into the bathroom, where Townsell joined moments later after keeping watch. Assad died from her injuries a few days later; Williams and Townsell fled the scene but were arrested the following month and held without bail.
On Friday, Williams, who had criminal records including grand larceny and attempted robbery, expressed her sorrow at the loss in a statement through her lawyer to the Assad family and explained that she had not killed anyone.
“I am so sorry for your loss,” the statement began, according to The Press-Enterprise. “I have prayed for you and your family every day. I am not responsible for the death of Ms. Assad. Although the courts have found me guilty of the charges, we all know the truth and that there is a judge and that is God , and that he knows the truth.”
