Good news for Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets. According to New York’s mayor, vaccination requirements for indoor events could soon be dropped, meaning that Irving could also take part in Nets home games.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference on Wednesday that he couldn’t wait for the vaccination mandate for indoor events to finally drop. So far, this has also affected Kyrie Irving, who is still not vaccinated and can therefore only participate in games outside of New York City.
“I am pleased that we can change a few things in the coming weeks,” said Adams. “It’s going in the right direction and we’re doing it carefully.” There is no exact date for the possible cancellation of the vaccination mandate, but it could still be a few weeks. The Nets still have a little time, after all, the playoffs don’t start until mid-April.
In Brooklyn, the mayor’s statements were received with satisfaction. “This is good news and it would be great if we could use Kyrie in every game,” head coach Steve Nash said after a training session. “But we still have no control over this and will wait patiently until the mayor has made a decision.”
Nash also stressed that Kyrie would play in every game if possible, so there would be no rest. Brooklyn has 23 games left. The Nets are currently 31-28, but that’s only enough for eighth place in the East. The gap to the last direct playoff place, which the Boston Celtics hold, is already 2.5 games.
