John Wall will continue to play for the Houston Rockets for the time being. As opposed to his advisor Rich Paul The Athletic confirmed, the point guard made use of his player option.
The move comes as no surprise as Wall will be taking his salary of $47,366,760 next season. A sum he would never have received as an unrestricted free agent.
Wall did not play a single game for the Rockets last season. Both sides agreed before the start of the season to scout for a potential trade as Houston’s focus is on the development of young guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green.
Before the 2022 deadline, there had been rumors of a swap deal between Wall and Russel Westbrook, but the Lakers were reportedly unwilling to give up an additional first-round pick. A buyout didn’t materialize either, as Wall wasn’t interested in giving up money.
The former number 1 pick has therefore been waiting for a game in the NBA since the 2020/21 season. However, it is unclear whether Wall will start the new season with the Rockets. According to the report, both sides want to find a solution to the tricky situation “in the near future”.
Due to the exorbitant salary, a buyer per trade can probably only be found if one or two assets are attached, which the team currently undergoing conversion is not interested in. Wall himself wants loud Hoops Hype like to play a role in a winning team.
