Will Smith’s slap against Chris Rock at the Oscars went far beyond cinema, even prompting basketball legend Karim Abdul-Jabar to publish a lengthy article on his blog. There, he said the slap did more damage to women and blacks than to Rock himself.
“Smith’s slap was also a slap against women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, then Smith’s reaction would have been welcome. Even if he had stayed where he was, just to shout his threats (ed. Will repeated twice, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth”), it would still be too much, but and understandable.
But with his blow against Rock, he announced that his wife was unable to defend herself against words. “From everything I’ve seen from Pinkett Smith over the years, she is a very capable, strong, smart woman who is able to endure a joke during the Academy Awards,” Abdul Jabar wrote.
He was also disappointed by Will Smith’s subsequent reaction when he received his award for the Williams Method. There, the actor shed a few tears while explaining how he looks like his character, who is ready to do anything to protect women in his family. The basketball player is adamant that this was the perfect moment to apologize, and not for another self-promotion of the offender’s matchmaking.
By his example, Will seems to be raising his own son Jaden, who hurried to write on social media “That’s how we do it”, expressing pride in his father’s actions. Kariem sees a huge problem in this as well, because a generation of young people is currently growing up who would gladly imitate such behavior.
