NBA Investigation: Damian Lillard’s Trade Request and Potential Penalties

Damian Lillard has set a difficult precedent in the NBA since he requested to be transferred at the beginning of July. Multiple reports indicated that the still Portland Trail Blazers point guard would only play again for the Miami Heat. Therefore, the league decided to investigate the player and his agent.

After that, the NBA sent a memo to all 30 teams regarding public trade requests, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, discussing possible penalties for making such comments for Lillard and any other player.

Chris Haynes, de Yahoo Sports, published the memorandum sent by the NBA to all franchises. In it, the league says it interviewed Lillard and his agent, Archie Goodwin, to find out if reports of his refusal to play for a team other than Miami were true.

After the investigation, the league noted that Lillard would not refuse to play for other teams and that communications between Goodwin and teams interested in acquiring the seven-time All-Star were consistent with what the player and his agent disclosed, but not altogether.

“We have informed Goodwin and Lillard that any future comments, made privately to the teams or publicly, suggesting that Lillard will not fully perform the services required under his player contract in the event of a trade will subject Lillard to disciplinary action by the nba. We have also informed the Players Association that any similar comments by players or their agents will be subject to future disciplinary action,” the memo says.
