The NBA draft will adopt a two-day format for the first time.
The league announced the change on Wednesday, which had been contemplated for several months. The first round of this year’s draft will take place on Wednesday, June 26 at the Barclays Center in New York. The second will take place the next day at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York.
Last year’s draft, in which Victor Wembanyama was the first pick and went to the San Antonio Spurs, lasted five hours and concluded around 12:45 midnight local time. Now, the league will extend the duration to a couple of days.
The time between each first round selection will continue to be five minutes. It will be increased from two to four minutes in the second round.
Teams will have several issues to attend to in the hours after the draft, such as seeking agreements with undrafted free agents and the mission of finding players to fill the rosters for the upcoming summer leagues.
Additionally, the league hopes that draft broadcasts will end at a more reasonable time and retain viewers’ attention.
The start date of the draft will be three days after the NBA Finals, in case they are extended to seven games.
The selection order for this draft will be defined in the May 12 draw.
