NBA: Dallas Mavericks without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving lose late lead – Memphis rookie becomes a hero

The weakened Dallas Mavericks lost 108-112 to the Memphis Grizzlies. Dallas was leading by double digits in the final stretch until a Grizzlies rookie made it hero.

Memphis Grizzlies (39-26) – Dallas Mavericks (34-33) 112:108 (BOXSCORE)

The absence of superstars from both teams in Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving (foot injury) and Ja Morant gave other players a chance to shine. David Roddy used his chance to pulverize the career high of his young career, after a maximum of 15 points so far, he gave the Mavericks 24 points. 19 of those came in the fourth quarter!

Roddy hit 10/13 from the field and 4/7 from downtown, the game’s top scorer was Desmond Bane with 25 points (8/18 FG, 7 rebounds, 8 assists). Memphis, meanwhile, was clearly in need of an energy boost. After the triumph, the whole team stayed with their rookie for Roddy’s interview to celebrate and tease him a bit.

Tyus Jones (11, 10 assists) and Dillon Brooks (8) were not in a good mood with 3/9 FG each, worse still from Jaren Jackson Jr. (14, 3/12) from the field. The Mavs, led by Tim Hardaway Jr. (23, 4/8 3P), took control in the third quarter until it was time for “Big Body Roddy” in the final quarter.

Jaden Hardy did well as a starter on the Mavs backcourt with 22 points at 9/21 FG, as did Josh Green (21, 9/16 FG, 10 rebounds). Support from the bench came mainly from Christian Wood (14, 4/8 FG) on offense, Maxi Kleber (4) grabbed 8 rebounds and played 4 assists in just under 26 minutes.

NBA: David Roddy outstanding in the final section

The Grizzlies were the first team to pull away, led by a strong Desmond Bane (17 points first half) with 9 points early in the second quarter, with Memphis leading 56-50 at halftime.

Dallas took the lead in the middle of the third quarter and extended it a little later. Tim Hardaway made it 83:77 with a floater after 36 minutes.

Christian Wood gave the game the game’s first double-digit lead early in the closing period, then Roddy began his heroics. With two hits in a row he reduced to -5, later with five more quick points to -1.

With just over three minutes to go, Bane reclaimed the lead for the Grizzlies, with Roddy raising. Hardy equalized with a cold-blooded stepback three, but these should be the last Mavs points before it was too late. Dallas only scored again in the last ten seconds, but by then they were already six points behind.
