The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the killings of six protesters in parts of the Nigerian state and vowed to investigate and seek justice.
NBA Suleja branch chairman Abdullahi Liman told Daily Trust that on the instructions of the NBA national chairman, he had gone to the residence of one of the deceased, Yahaya Nda Isah, to obtain credible information for further action.
He said: “The NBA national level has asked all branches to form monitoring committees regarding the protest.
“So, we are going around to see what is really going on. I received information that a man was shot dead and I came to the victim’s (Yahaya Nda Isah) house to confirm things for myself and I saw the dead body.
“So what we are doing now is gathering information regarding the incident and I will communicate with the national level so that we know what to do next regarding the issue. This cannot be denied.”
Isah along with other protesters were killed on Thursday during protests against bad governance when they were reportedly shot by police when they refused to leave the Abuja-Kaduna highway where they were protesting.
Niger Police Command spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun blamed thugs for the killings in a statement he issued on the development.
The NBA had promised to provide free legal services to any peaceful protester assaulted, intimidated or killed during the nationwide hunger protest.
NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau (SAN) had ordered the presidents of the 130 NBA branches across the country to monitor the protest, saying the measures recognised the fundamental and constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to assemble and protest.
