Salzburg Festival: On Monday, 28 “stumbling blocks”, dedicated to the artists expelled and murdered by the Nazis, were unveiled in front of the house for Mozart.
The 100th anniversary of the Salzburg Festival was opened this year with “Elektra”. The last “Elektra” before the Nazis destroyed the spirit of this European festival dedicated to peace took place in 1937: Lothar Wallerstein was the director, Rose Pauly sang the title role, and Klytämnestra Rosette Anday. Who else knows them but the initiated? They were once stars. And their careers and in some cases their lives were ruined just a year after their festival jubilation.
